MY GENIUS HOUR
Cancer : the cure
Michael WAng : period 4
Cancer : a deadly killerCancer has a reputation for being scary. It is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. The deadliest cancer has a 93% mortality rate within 5 years of diagnosis. We have come to connect diagnosis of this disease with a death sentence. It has torn families and lives apart.
So the question often asked is, when will we find a cure to cancer? Is there even one? After a bit of digging around and research, I have compiled basic information on the disease, and my own opinion on the matter. Click through the tabs to learn more.

why did i choose this topic?
Last year, I took part in Duke TIP's summer program, selecting the course Modern Medicine: Disease and Immunology. This experience opened my eyes to the world of microbiology and how diseases work against humans. Ever since, an interest in the medical field has stayed with me, even if I won't have any intentions of entering it.
One of the topics we briefly went over was cancer, a disease much unlike others I learned about. Not always caused by invading pathogens, nor caused by a genetic disorder happening before birth, but rather a small mutation of your cells' DNA, resulting in abnormal cell division. Something that sounds so insignificant can end up as a major killer. It has taken the lives of some of my family members. Many organizations exist to raise money for research against cancer. Even false ads seen on untrustworthy websites may display miracle drugs and food that combat cancer. All these reasons are why I am particularly drawn towards this subject.
